DB9 replacement heads a new line-up of Aston models
Aston Martin has confirmed that the DB9’s replacement will be called the DB11. Speaking to evo’s sister publication, Auto Express, CEO Andy Palmer revealed that the car will be underpinned by updated VH architecture and will benefit from Daimler electronic architecture.
The DB11 will likely feature a further developed version of the current Aston Martin V12 – current market trends suggest it could be turbocharged to boost power and efficiency. We also expect a V8 version to be introduced, likely utilising the current Mercedes AMG GT’s ‘hot-vee’ V8, which produces as much as 503bhp and 479lb ft of torque in S-spec.
Palmer’s comments about Daimler architecture back suggestions that the DB11 will gain Mercedes switchgear and electronics. Using Mercedes’ sat-nav would certainly address issues found with Aston’s current, rather dated system.
‘We have the issue with some people saying the cars all look alike,’ he told Auto Express. ‘That’s solved in the next generation of cars.' The rendering above previews what it could look like, mixing elements of the DB10 with Aston's DBX crossover concept.
Palmer also confirmed that the DB11’s underpinnings share very few parts with previous generations of the architecture, which has been in use for 12 years. ‘There’s barely a common part,’ he said.
For those interested as to why the car won’t be called the DB10, it’s because that moniker was reserved for James Bond’s film car. ‘Calling it 10 meant we were always going to skip a generation and call the next one 11’ said Palmer.
The DB11 will arrive in the fourth quarter of 2016. It’s expected to make its world debut at the Geneva motor show in March.
